Bud Selig is a big, stupid moron. So is Rick Reilly and so is Gene Wojciechowski, and so is anyone else who is trying to blunt the achievement of Barry Bonds for hitting his 756th home run.
“He cheated!” people cry. How? What did he do that was illegal, or against the rules?
“He took steroids!” comes the reply. So? Look at the records – at the time he allegedly (never tested positive, remember) took steroids, baseball had no laws, rules, or regulations against it.
“He’s a mean person!” Now we’re getting silly. Ty Cobb was no saint – even Steve Carlton was not known for his politeness to either the media or fans.
Barry Bonds has accomplished something no one else ever has – he hit more home runs in a career than anyone to ever play major league baseball. Any athlete will tell you that the most difficult achievement in sports is to hit a baseball coming straight toward you at 90 miles per hour (give or take) with a bat. And yet, Barry Bonds not only has hit the ball well, he has hit more balls out of the park than anyone else. For that, he deserves congratulations, praise, and respect.
Mr. Selig, Mr. Reilly, and Mr. Wojciechowski all need to get off their high horses, admit that the record is legitimate, and move on.
Mr. Bonds, congratulations. I hope you hold the record for a long, long time.
